The Comeback

Well I wasn't planning on writing another blog till Friday, after Team Canada won the gold at the World Juniors, or at least that was the plan; But as team Canada forward Brendan Gallagher said; "that won't happen anymore". Team Canada was defeated for the second year in a row by Russia, losing 6-5 on Tuesday evening. But despite the loss, it was quite the game, one that will not soon be forgotten, and needless to say, I'm happy I didn't go to bed after the second period.



My hockey viewing last night started off with me watching the end of the Leaf game with my dad; then as the clock struck 9, I fired up my laptop and followed the World Junior game on twitter, where I quickly learned that Russia was beating Canada 2-0. I though it was a mis-tweet at first, maybe the person that tweeted the score got confused. But after the Leaf game ended, we flipped to the World Junior game, and I quickly saw for myself that Canada was down by 2. I was stunned to see Canada losing by 2, so early in the game, but then the lone bright spark for Canada early in the game, was when, Brett Connolly arguable the best forward for the tournament, scored to cut the lead in half. It was 2-1 team Canada had hope, the crowd got excited again, we saw the comeback happening. Then after a weak call on Gallagher, Russian's

Evgeni Kuznetsov scored his 2nd goal of the evening, then shortly after notched his 3rd goal, giving him a hat trick and making it 4-1. After the goal team Canada goaltender Scott Wedgewood, was barrelled over, by a Russian player, and laid flat on the ice, that put an end to Wedgewood's night. Cue Mark Visentin, who blew the 3 goal lead in last year's World Junior gold medal game, to who other than the Russians. But it just wasn't going to happen; as Russia scored their 5th goal on just the second shot Visentin faced. It was 5-1 at that point,  and it just didn't seem like it was Canada's night. Before the start of the third, my dad asked me if I was really going to stay up much longer, since Canada, obviously wasn't going to win. But I told him I had to stay up just a little longer, I didn't want to miss an amazing once in a lifetime kind of comeback from team Canada. (yes those where my exact words before the 3rd period even started.) I had a feeling in my gut, that Canada wasn't going to just rollover, but then on a delayed penalty in the 3rd period, Canada's Nathan Beaulieu decided to argue the call with the referee instead of skating hard on the back-check, the lack of Beaulieu being in the play gave the Russians plenty of time to finish off a passing play that made it 6-1. 

Not going to lie, after the 6th goal, I was extremely worried that Canada wouldn't be able to overcome the deficit. Especially against the Russian goaltender who had been standing on his head all night, despite only being 17. But then something clicked, the light turned on and the machine known as the team Canada world junior team, started to work together; 2 quick goals by Dougie Hamilton and Canada's captain Jaden Schwartz, made it 6-3, and the deficit didn't seem so large anymore, there was hope, fans were on their feet again and cheering loudly, and the players looked excited and energized again, ready to close the gap. The my favourite baby faced player Brendan Gallagher scored making it 6-4, and then Brandon Gormley potted one making it 6-5, and the deficit was cut to one! Canada made an epic 
come-back in the third period, scoring 4 goals in a little over 5 minutes! It got excited and the Russians got scared, after already using their timeout, Russia's coach went on a gut feeling and decided to pull the 17 year old starting goaltender Andrei Vasilevski, and replace him with 20 year old veteran goaltender, Andrei Makarov in order to slow Canada's momentum. The gut feeling worked and Russia was able to handle the onslaught of the Canadians in the final 2 minutes. It came oh so close, as the game of inches played a factor when Ryan Strome hit the goal post in the dieing seconds of the game. It was a heartbreaking loss for team Canada, who for a second straight year, had their dreams crushed by Russia, and for the 3rd straight year will not be taking home a gold medal from the World Junior tournament.


So how and why did Team Canada lose? 3 simple factors that make all the difference, in these crucial games, is how.

Goaltending; Team Canada hasn't had a decent goalie that they can rely heavily on, since Carey Price back in 2007, that's 5 years of rocky goaltending. Although Edgewood let in 4 goals on 13 shots, you can't place all the blame on him, he had no chance on at least 3 of the goals, his own teammate Ryan Murray scored on him 3 times, by deflecting Russian shots. Yes sadly enough Ryan Murray deflected 3 straight goals into his own net, he make history and be talked about for years, unfortunately not in the way he would like. Then there is Mark Visentin, who I have not liked/trusted in net since blowing that 3 goal lead to Russia last year, costing us the gold medal. I don't think he takes it seriously enough, if you look at his reaction after the 6th Russian goal, he was smiling/laughing; your team is down 6-1 and not going to make it to the finals and you're smiling? So I was quite happy when Wedgewood was chosen to start this game over the lacklustre Visentin. Sadly enough neither of the two goaltenders for team Canada were good enough to win the gold, wheather you like it or not, it's true.
Second reason we lost; undisciplined selfish penalties taken by guys who should know better. Boone Jenner received a 5 minute major and a game misconduct for spearing Kuznetsov. Now on any normal occasion, that penalty would have been stupid anyway, but team Canada was already getting a much needed 2 minute power play, after Kuznetsov had, clotheslined Jenner. Another thing that really bugs me about this play; Kuznetsov came over to see if Jenner was okay! That's the only reason he was there! It was a dumb selfish move by Jenner, who should have just accepted the apology and skated to the bench. If that wasn't bad enough; Jonathan Huberdeau decided he didn't like the call from the referees and showed it, by banging his stick on the ice earning him an extra 10 minute misconduct. Another selfish, dumb penalty by Canada. We sank down to Russia's level, or dirty cheap hockey, and we can't beat them at their own game. The fact of the matter is, these guys are just teenagers, and with teenagers tempers rise, and then you mix the emotion of representing your country, and getting beat by the Russian again, a few of the players just couldn't handle it, and lashed out/voiced their displeasure. And the last reason, was the play of the Russian goaltender Andrei Vasilevski who had to face 56 shots! For a goalie 56 shots is a ton, it's roughly what an NHL goalie will face in 2 full games! (30 + 26) Not to mention he stopped 51 of those shots, from the skilled Canadian snipers. Team Canada was just out goaltended in the game, Russia wanted to win more than the Canadian squad.


But Let's end this evaluation of the game and tournament of a positive note; The best players from Tuesday nights match.

For Team Canada; One of the top players is my favourite Brendan Gallagher, he is literally the heart and soul of this Canadian team! last night he was extremely instrumental in the comeback, scoring a goal and adding two assists! Despite of being 5 foot 8, 178 pounds; Gallagher goes all out and doesn't worry about being the smallest person on the ice; In the game against the US, Gallagher even knocked over a 6 foot 2, 220 pound defenceman. “I’ve always been told I was too small,” Gallagher said in an interview with the Montreal Gazette. “I was always the smallest guy out there. I learned to deal with it at a young age. It’s something that never really bothered me. I was always able to do what I wanted to do. “
Gallagher is not afraid of anyone when playing, he'll drive the net hard no matter who is in his way.
Another impressive player from the tournament was Brett Connolly; the Tampa Bay Lightning forward on lone for the World Juniors. Despite being under much scrutiny during the selection camp; due to a hit of teammate Quinton Howden and vastly underperforming, but after that debacle, Connolly was named an Alternete captain and had quite the tournament; in 5 games Connolly scored 4 goals and added an assist, not mention he was a +5 for the tournament. Then there was Mark Stone, who barely missed tying the game up on Tuesday. Stone scored 7 times though Canada's first 4 games. 

We'll wrap things up with talking about Russia's best players from Tuesday nights match;
Evgeni Kuznetsov; who managed a hat trick plus an assist dominated the game for the Russians. Not only was his presence felt in the game, but the whole tournament had Kuznetsov finding the back of the net; this was his second hat trick of the tournament. Kuznetsov is a former firs round pick of the Capitals, and one of their top prospects. So far the Capitals prospect has 6 goals and 13 points in the tournament, and still has another game to play,.
Nail Yakupov, who is rumoured to be the first overall pick at the 2012 draft. He finished Tuesdays match with 4 assists. "We didn't finish strong, but we scored six goals and we beat Canada," said Russian forward Nail Yakupov. "Russia's better than Canada." One thing the Russians were extremely good, at was making enemies with the Team Canada fans, they'd laugh and make faces at fans in front of the boards, and encouraged all the boo's; this year Yakupov is correct Russia beat us, making them the better team!

Good Job boys, keep your head held high, you went out with class and amassed a near comeback that will go down in history! keep your spirits high and come out ready to win the Bronze medal! It's a little disheartening hearing that, this is the first time in 11 years Canada will not be apart of gold medal game.
But to be honest we didn't deserve to be there, especially the way we started the game against Russia. Poorly played 40 minutes of hockey!

2012 Winter Classic

Yesterday the NHL took the game of hockey back where it all started, outdoors. What began as a dream for young kids skating on backyard rinks and frozen ponds, became their reality when they made it to the NHL. Monday afternoon 40 professional hockey players got to be kids again, enjoying the game in the great outdoors, where it all started. Monday Afternoon marked the 5th time, a NHL hockey game had been played outdoors, this years match up was between the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers. The Rangers ended up winning the game 3-2, and moved 4 points up on the Flyers for 1st in the East.

Ever heard of Michael Rupp? No, well don't worry I hadn't either. Well I've heard of Michael Rupp the fighter, but the goal scorer? Believe it or not it was the goal scoring of Rupp and the goal stopping ability of Lundqvist that stole the show, and helped the Rangers stay in first. The game was actually fairly decent; the weather co-operated, there were tons of goals scored (sort of), and there was drama, lots of drama. The HBO 24/7 crew could not have scripted the game any better, than it ended up; Let's look into some of the drama;

Right away, after the Canadian National Anthem was sung, the whole ball park erupted into what sounded like a chorus of "boo's", which gave everyone who disliked the Flyers and their fans, more reason to not like them. There was also suspicion that a picture of Claude Giroux had been placed on the jumbo screen and the fans were chanting "roooo". But I personally like the first situation better, so that's what I'm going to stick with. Next up on the drama stage was an apparent injury to Jagr. After the first period Jagr never stepped foot on the ice, and had his "butt nailed to the bench" as the commentators stated at least 8 times. Jagr said his leg had swelled up and just couldn't skate properly. "It was getting worse and worse," he said. "I just couldn't skate hard, and I didn't want to be there (just) to be there. I knew at that point I couldn't help my teammates." Despite the Flyers being without Jagr and their captain Pronger, they jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second period. With Jagr being out, Giroux had all eyes on him, and he didn't let anyone down, he scored the the Flyers 2nd goal and re-took the lead as the NHL's leading scorer. 
Oh and how could I forget, Brayden Schenn scored his first NHL goal! Could a player have a better game to score his first goal in? I couldn't be happier for the junior Schenn, it's been a rough year for him, since being acquired by the Flyers in June. He was unable to crack the roster out of training camp due to a shoulder injury, then when he finally got his chance in the NHL he broke his foot blocking a shot in his 4th game, then 2 games after he returned, he went down with a mild concussion. He finally returned to the line-up December 27th. Through the 37 games so far this season, Schenn has played in 18 of them, but failed to record his first NHL goal. Scoring in the Winter Classic, kind of makes up for the rough start, and hopefully is the start of things to come for Brayden. I've always liked Brayden Schenn since his World Junior day, this kid is going to be a top notch players in years to come. Speaking of players that have been injured this season; the Rangers welcomed back injured defenceman Marc Staal, on Monday afternoon. Staal wanted to play in the Winter Classic, and got his wish. Staal had missed all 37 prior games due to a concussion. He averaged around 12 minutes of ice time, but had a difficult time with the pace of the game, so Rangers head coach, Tortorella limited his play. Flyers fans were quite excited and confident that their team would hold on for a victory. But que the unlikely hero; Mike Rupp, despite playing just 7 mins and 34 seconds of the game, the Winter Classic veteran came up big and ultimately saved the Rangers bacon. Just 30 seconds after Giroux scored giving the Flyers a 2-0 lead, Rupp scored his first goal of the game, and got the crowed stirred up after giving them the Jagr salute. When asked about the goal, Rupp played innocent, claiming he didn't even know that was Jagr's move. The move landed Rupp as a trending topic world wide on Twitter, as his agent Allan Walsh noted. But Rupp wasn't done their, 2:41 into the 3rd period, he scored his second goal of the game, and tied the game up at 2's. Rupp had played in last years instalment of the Winter Classic as a member of the Penguins, a game in which he took a beating. He was one of the few Rangers who had skated outdoors in the Winter Classic before, and gave an inspiring pre game speech. The the big free agent fish Brad Richards potted the 3rd Rangers goal a mere 3 minus after Rupp's goal. Richards goal proved to be the game winner. 
Then with 20 seconds left the referees awarded a penalty shot to Daniel Briere. This was really, the most dramatic scenario in the entire game; a penalty shot, 20 seconds left, and a one goal game, plus their probably shouldn't have been a penalty shot in the first place. Never the less is was Daniel Briere vs. King Lundqvist with 20 seconds left, the game on the line; Lundqvist stood strong and stopped Briere, helping ice the victory for the Rangers. Briere gave credit to the likely Vezina trophy candidate after the game; "This game was going to overtime. That's all I had in my mind as I stood at centre ice and waited to take the penalty shot in the last minute today. Coming in on Lundqvist, I had beaten him once on the blocker side, once on the glove side. He had stopped me a couple times before as well in shootouts, but I was still convinced I was going to score. I tried to surprise him with a quick little shot, unfortunately he was quicker than me. I've got to give him credit for that."  Lundqvist was the story of the game, and arguably stole the game for the Rangers, making 34 saves and a .944 save percentage. But the intense nail biting drama didn't stop after the final buzzer ended the game; Rangers head coach John Tortorella, made his feelings known about the officiating of the winter classic; “It started with the non-call [when] Gabby was pitch-forked in the stomach, and then everything starts going against us. They’re two good referees; I thought the game was refereed horribly. "So I’m not sure what happened there. Maybe they wanted to get it to an overtime. I’m not sure if they have meetings about that or what. But we stood in there. They’re good guys. But in that third period, it was disgusting.” Tortorella didn't stop there; he then raised the notion of the NBC and the refs having a meeting to send the game into OT. A conspiracy if you will. I think there has to be some truth to what Tortorella was talking about, OT equals more excitement, which equals better ratings and more money for both the NHL and NBC.

And who could forget when the news broke that the Flyers would not be starting Ilya Bryzgalov in the Winter Classic. Fans and media heard the news from Bryzgalov, who had not been given permission to tell the media about it. Then he jokes that his team would actually have a chance to win, with him sitting on the bench. Many thought Brzgalov was out of line, some think he's a $51 million train wreck, but few found his little act funny. But as Don Cherry from Hockey Night in Canada pointed out; "he's hurt; it crushed him, knowing he wasn't going to get to play in the Winter Classic."


But apart from all the drama; (which is actually good for the NHL). There was the 37th game of the NHL season to be played, and a big 2 points at stake. The ice held up, which was fantastic, compared to last years game, and no one was severely injured, big improvement from last years Winter Classic. I'd say, this years classic, was a ton better than last years; more exciting, better conditions, goals were actually scored and in dramatic effect. I didn't want the game to end.
I tried to enter the game as an impartial hockey fan, cheering for only a good game, as I am not a fan of the Rangers or Flyers. But I quickly found myself siding with the Rangers, and hoping they would skate away with the 2 points. I don't know why but I just can't warm up to the Flyers. Lastly my favourite part of the whole event; the specially made jerseys just for the game; The Rangers had the better jerseys and were much more creative compared to the Flyers. The Rangers had a nice off white pattern, with an old looking logo, it looked very heritage/ vintage and different. Where as the Flyers kept their usual ugly orange colour jerseys, and kept the same logo they always use. 


All in all, I'd say it was really good game and I thoroughly enjoyed watching, it started off slow as both teams were adjusting to the elements and environment, but after the 1st period everything picked up. I do love watching the Winter Classic, and the attention it brings the game, it gets people who generally wouldn't watch hockey, to give it a little look.
I believe the next 2 Winter Classic venues have already been chosen and are in the works, and sadly non of them are north of the boarder. Now there is no guarantee these are official; Detroit and Washington appear to be hosting the next 2 Winter Classics. (2013-2014)

Top 10 hockey stories 2011

Hey everyone, hope you all had a great Christmas and Santa brought you guys everything you asked for. So with 2012 right around the corner, it's time to take a look back at the top stories from the last 12 months around the NHL.

ah, 2011 was quite the year for the NHL; from concussions to coaching changes, Stanley cup excitement to tragedy, star players not performing to rookies dominating the NHL. No matter what team you cheer for, it's near impossible to have not been amazed, stunned or puzzled by the NHL this past year, so let's take a look at the top 10 stories from 2011. Now my top 10 might be a little different then most top 10's you see, to crack my top 10 it has to be an event that changed or impacted the NHL, either for the better or worse.

10. This story got more focus on it then it probably deserved, but at the same time hasn't gotten nearly enough recognition for what it meant for the NHL. The 2011 Winter Classic featured arguably the two biggest faces in the NHL, Crosby vs. Ovechkin. This was a huge marketing tool for the NHL having the two biggest names in hockey square off in one of the most watched games before the playoffs. The NHL even partnered with HBO to start a documentary 4 part series leading up to the big game. This could have been a huge game for the NHL, the key word being could. The weather left something to be desired, We saw Crosby the headline for the event injured which lead to his 10 month lay off, and frankly the game didn't live up to the hype, I for one was extremely disappointed with the game. But this 1 game, had a huge impact on the NHL both in positive and negative ways.

Positives; The match up of Crosby vs. Ovechkin, Capitals vs. Pens brought a huge crowd and audience for the game, the 2011 winter classic was the most watched NHL regular season game in the USA since 1975.  The NHL was able to set up the special TV documentary with HBO, which likely raked in a ton of money for the league.

Negatives; Arguable the best, most popular player in the NHL was injured and missed 10 months. The hit to Crosby lit the little fire over, concussion issues in the NHL, and was arguably responsible for the rule change on head hits. The weather was horrible, which caused the game to be delayed 7 hours! When the game did eventually start, the ice was horrible due to it raining instead of snowing, which lead to sloppy play and a pretty weak game. Crosby and Ovechkin the main attractions, didn't even score or register a point!

Even though the 2011 Winter Classic is often over looked, it had a huge foot print in the NHL, unfortunately for the league from a fan stand point the negatives out weighed the positives. Another factor from the game, was the scheduling, the winter classic has always been played on January 1st, but due to competition with the NFL, the NHL has moved the 2012 Winter Classic to January 2nd.


9. The Boston Bruins winning the Stanley cup. Sorry Bruins fans, this story isn't as big of some of the top notch stories, so it fits in at number 9. Just the fact that the Bruins won the cup ending their 39 year Stanley cup drought. But there are two things that really stood out for me, with the Bruins winning the cup; they endured 3, sets of 7 game series. That is incredible, the will, determination and skill needed to accomplish winning just 1, 7 game series, is so draining for the players, but the fact the Bruins were able to do it 3 times, says something about not only the skill, but the heart and character of this team. They became the first team in NHL history to win 3, game 7's. Not only did they fight back from a 2-0 deficit against the Canucks, they shutout the Canucks in Vancouver in game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. That is un heard off, Shutting out Vancouver in Vancouver is no easy task. The Bruins relied heavily on the Vezina and Conn Smythe winning goaltender Tim Thomas, during their run to the cup. Thomas was the backbone of this team, and out duelled Canucks goaltender Roberto Loungo. But let's take a moment to discuss what happened in the Stanley Cup finals; The Bruins lost star forward and fan favourite Nathan Horton, after a hit to the head from Canucks Aaron Rome, this hit was the turning point of the series; they Canucks lost Rome for the rest of the series and the Bruins got pissed off, and started playing their type of physical hockey again. Besides the frightening scene of Horton convulsing on the ice and being taken off on a stretcher, was the suspension handed down to Aaron Rome. Rome was given a 4 game suspension, the longest suspension in NHL playoff history. The hit turned the whole series around for the Bruins who were down 2-0 in the series, they all rallied together and "won for Horton". Then after a Canucks win, Loungo went and opened his big mouth and started a war for words between the two netminders; Loungo critiqued Thomas for a goal he had allowed, "saying that it was an easy save for a goalie who stays in his crease" Then when Loungo realised his mistake, instead of shutting up and focusing on the game he took it a step further by complaining that Thomas hadn't given any return compliments to Loungo; “I’ve been pumping his tires ever since the series started. I haven’t heard any one nice thing he’s had to say about me, so that’s the way it is.” Thomas took it all in stride and even had some fun with the situation; "I guess I didn't realise it was my job to pump his tires," Thomas said with a grin. "I guess I have to apologise for that." But Sadly for Loungo, when the trash talking stopped, he was not able to stop what really mattered, the puck.
But through all the drama, injuries and suspensions, the Bruins prevailed to become the 2011 Stanley Cup champions. Can they repeat? Or better yet will we see a Canuck vs. Bruins rematch?

8. Number 8 on the list goes hand and hand with number 9, as it was a direct result of the Stanley Cup finals. Soon after the Canucks lost to the Bruins in game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, the city of Vancouver went absolutely nuts. The infamous Vancouver riot, the sad thing about the whole riot situation was, half the people there weren't even upset by the outcome of the finals, many professional "trouble makers" came to Vancouver just in case their was a riot. Never the less, the city of Vancouver was absolutely destroyed, people who had just consumed higher amounts of beer than their IQ points, took to the street to burn/smash everything in sight. Cop cars were burned, stores were vandalised and broken into, people were injured and the city was a absolute mess. The Fine city of Vancouver was embarrassed by these riots and appalled at what so called "fans" were doing, thankfully a lot of the true fans turned up the next day to help clean up the ruckus. The cops should have been better prepared and aware of the situation considering, Canuck fans rioted when they lost in the 1994 Stanley cup finals. But it was still a shocking scene, that reminds us, sometimes Canadians can take hockey a little to seriously. But one of the most iconic pictures of the year did come from the riot; no not a picture of police cars on fire or smashed store fronts, rather a photo of a couple entangled in each other lieing in the middle of the riot making out. The results of the riot? 140 people injured, 4 people stabbed, 9 police officers injured and 101 people arrested not to mention the 4 million dollars worth of damage, theft and vandalism. On June 15th 2011 so many things went wrong for the city of Vancouver; Their team lost, the town let fans drink beer all day, the cops underestimated the power of the people and the people showed what happens when drunk people get really pissed off.

7. The much anticipated return of a hockey team to Winnipeg, no not the Phoenix Coyotes but instead the Atlanta Thrashers. It became official at the end of May, the Thrashers had been bought and were being moved north of the boarding marking the 7th Canadian NHL team. After months of speculation that the Coyotes would be heading back to their original hometown, the NHL changed direction and yanked the beloved Thrashers from Atlanta without any second thoughts. It was a extremely quick decision made by Gary Bettman, who was ultimately trying to buy more time for the Coyotes. But never the less, the city of Winnipeg was set a buzz with the news they were being given another chance to host  a NHL hockey team, the fans determined not to lose another NHL team, fled to buy tickets and meet all of Gary Bettman's demands. So there they had their hockey team back, but one thing remained; what would the Franchise be called, it really wasn't that hard to think of a name, and at the draft they announced the team would once again be called the Winnipeg Jets. The way the fans reacted you would have thought they gained their Independence day, fans took to the city and went crazy! thankfully they were much more civilised than the Canuck fans. The Atlanta Thrashers, er, I mean the Winnipeg Jets played their first game back in Winnipeg against the Montreal Canadians, a all Canadian battle. The game itself couldn't have gone much worse for the Jets, losing 4-1. But since their home opener the Jets have found their stride and are actually playing some decent hockey and are in the middle of the Playoff race, not bad for a team that is basically still the Thrashers, just with a different name and jerseys and home town. Around the NHL right now I don't think you could find a more excitable home crowd to play in front of, the rink is packed full night in and night out, with fans doing whatever it takes to keep their team this time around. So congrats to Winnipeg on getting the Thrashers er, I mean your Jets back!

6. There's a new sheriff in town, Colin Campbell stepped down after 13 years of being Bettman's wing man, NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety was his official title. After a season of controversy and criticism for Campbell he decided enough was enough and stepped aside, for long time NHL player Brendan Shanahan. Right from the start of the preseason there was a different sense of urgency with the NHL and their discipline; Shanahan decided to shake things up and send out snazzy videos following each hearing/suspension, explaining his ruling on the play. Although the videos are meant to provide clarity on the situations, there is anything but clarity in the NHL right now, everyone is confused including Shanahan. Hits that are perfectly legal are getting to much attention and hits that are illegal are going without punishment, Shanahan has been very inconstant with his suspensions. All in all Shanahan's hiring has been taken positively around the league, everyone seems happy to have a new eye watching the games and hits.

5. Now anytime the police are called and have to open up an investigation on something, you know 
something big has happened. What does this have to do with hockey? Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara cross checked Habs player Max Pacioretty from behind into the stanchion between the benches, Habs fans were irate with the hit, and furious when they found out Chara would not be suspended. So what did the Habs fans do? They called the police! Seriously who calls the police after a hit in the NHL? Anyways Chara ended up not being charged, and Pacioretty eventually recovered from his concussion and broken vertebra, he even played in the playoffs. To be honest the incident got more publicity and attention than it should have, if the perfectly legal body check Chara layed on Pacioretty had happened in any other part of the ice, Pacioretty would be fine and the police would not have been called. It was more of a wrong place wrong time for Pacioretty. So why am I giving this story more attention, well it's not because of the hit, it's because of the innocent piece of glass that has had it in for many a player sent flying it's way, the stanchion. This hit prompted the NHL to change all the stanchion's in every hockey arena to prevent further situations like the Chara Paciorett one. Instead of being a straight piece of glass, the stanchions were curved into the shape of a J to help absorb the impact when players are hit into them. This one incident was able to immediately spark change in the NHL, something that is not easy to do. Even though it may not be in your immediate top 10 NHL plays, but it is an important event, because of the fact it had an impact on the game.

4. How about the Flyers off season? anyone see it coming? I know I didn't. Most GM's around the league, would be just fine making it to the Conference finals 2 years in a row, and having players like Jeff Carter and Mike Richards leading your team. Well apparently Flyers GM Paul Holmgren wasn't satisfied. 1 day, 2 trades and a completely different Flyers team is hitting the ice for 2011-2012; Holmgren was able to ship off Richards and Carter in separate deals, signed Ilya Bryzagalov to a massive 9 year 51 million dollar contract and then loured Jaromir Jagr away from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Wow talk about a intense off season makeover. The moving of Carter and Richards was mainly to free up cap space, and to change up the attitude in the dressing room. Not only did they dump "dead weight" the also picked up hot young prospects; Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds. The off season moves haven't affected the Flyers in a negative way, like many suspected, instead they Flyers are on fire! They are 4th in the eastern conference, have the leagues leading scorer and are playing in a Winter Classic match up in a couple of days. But can they do it all again next off season? It looks like they will be losing captain and long time veteran Chris Pronger. It would appear that the era for blockbuster trades in the NHL are still make able. So why is this on the list of top 10's? Because it changed the make up of an entire NHL team; You replace long time NHL proven veterans with young rookies, trying to make their way in the NHL and a goalie who is frankly over rated. But give Peter Holmgren credit, pulling off such big trades, at first I wasn't sure what he was smoking when he, traded Richards and Carter, but now I really like the deal. After a while things start to leak out, Carter and Richards were a problem in the dressing room and weren't playing their best night in and night out, and those players need to be moved before that attitude spreads. So kudos to Holmgren.


3. How about the news that, the NHL was going to change up the two divisions and split 30 teams into 4 conferences. Don't believe it? well start believing it, once it was official that the Jets were back in Winnipeg, there was no question that teams had to change conferences in able to keep costs, and travel time down. Considering the Jets are in the conference as Carolina and Florida, that's not going to work long time. There were a lot of opions and discussions about maintaining rivals and regional battles; what came out of all this discussion; drastic changes, 4 conferences and a whole new playoff format, that could ultimately make a east vs. east Stanley cup showdown. So here's how it all breaks down for playoffs; top 4 teams from each conference make the playoffs, then the 4 teams in those conferences will battle it out, to make the top 2 from each conference, then some how the teams will be re seeded and then playoff some how. I love the new realignment, I think it will be exciting and add new meaning to the battle of Ontario and other important rivalries. So I'm excited to see how this will all work out and possibly even see an Ovechkin vs. Crosby Stanley cup final, or Loungo vs. Toews cup final. This is a big story for sure as it's changing the entire make up of the NHL.  I believe the conferences consist of 2, 7 team conferenes and 2, 6 team conference.


Some of the negatives to this new system; 2 teams wont make the post season, teams may be out of the playoff race by Christmas, we will lose the battle of the West vs. East teams which kind of sucks.


Some positives; every team will get to play every other team in a home and home showdown. So Leafs will play the Oilers more often. The possible east vs. east Stanley cup showdown, More importance on the conference rivals, like Ottawa vs. Toronto as likely only 1 of them will make the playoffs.


I can not wait to see this new system implemented, could make for a more interesting league and match ups, as teams will play other teams in their conferences 7 times each, putting more importance on those games.


2. Summer of Tragedy; this was quite the off season for the NHL and not in a positive way, we saw 3 former enforces kick the can and an entire hockey team dead after a plane crash in Russia. First player we lost was Derek Boogard, who accidentally over dosed, before he went to sleep, and did not awake in the morning, Next was Rick Rypien was the second death that shocked the hockey world, Rypien took his own life after battling depression for several years, due to his many concussion after his career full of fighting. Then when the hockey world was still reeling and trying to figure out and recover from these two deaths, we lost yet another player to accidental death; Wade Belak former enforcer was found dead in his apartment. All three players were enforces for their respective teams; the life of an enforcer is a lonely life, beat the crap out of other guys, or get your butt kicked. All three suffered from depression. Many are trying to link their deaths due to their careers and concussions, but ultimately it is wrong to do sure. It was a horrifying sad summer after hearing of the deaths of these players, the brotherhood of hockey players, united to honour these fallen players. Not long after, a plane carrying a KHL hockey team crashed in Russia, whipping out the whole KHL team. The entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team was killed after the plane hit a tower upon take off, 43 of 45 people on board were killed including ever player, many who had played in the NHL and all team officials. An entire elite KHL hockey team was whipped from existence, families were devastated, it was an absolute nightmare. 2011 had to be the worst summer for hockey, if this wasn't the worst I don't know what was. Tragedy after tragedy, we lost too many players, but most importantly too many people who were lost before their time, it has to be a reminder to everyone that hockey is just a game and there is more to life than hockey.


1. This number 1 story is pretty easy to guess if you've read some of my previous blog.... Concussions.

Whether the league want's to admit it or not, there is a concussion epidemic right now.  It all started with the first Crosby head injury, and has come to the point where, almost every night someone has been concussed. Crosby missed a whopping 11 months with his first concussion, then after his return in November, he was then put on injured reserve after a handful of games. More and more attention has been given to the concussions, and more and more big names are going down with concussions; names like Crosby, Miller, Pronger, Richards, Giroux, Weber. This has sparked some massive debates over what if anything the NHL can and should be doing to protect the players. The concussion epidemic, has sparked many changes throughout the league. There are now 30 players sitting out with concussions. 2011 was suppossed to be Crosby's year to solidify imself as the best player to play the game, instead 2011 was the year of the concussions.

Hey everyone, hope you all had a great Christmas and Santa brought you guys everything you asked for. So with 2012 right around the corner, it's time to take a look back at the top stories from the last 12 months around the NHL.

ah, 2011 was quite the year for the NHL; from concussions to coaching changes, Stanley cup excitement to tragedy, star players not performing to rookies dominating the NHL. No matter what team you cheer for, it's near impossible to have not been amazed, stunned or puzzled by the NHL this past year, so let's take a look at the top 10 stories from 2011. Now my top 10 might be a little different then most top 10's you see, to crack my top 10 it has to be an event that changed or impacted the NHL, either for the better or worse.

Instead of being a straight piece of glass, the stanchions were curved into the shape of a J to help absorb the impact when players are hit into them. This one incident was able to immediately spark change in the NHL, something that is not easy to do. Even though it may not be in your immediate top 10 NHL plays, but it is an important event, because of the fact it had an impact on the game.

4. How about the Flyers off season? anyone see it coming? I know I didn't. Most GM's around the league, would be just fine making it to the Conference finals 2 years in a row, and having players like Jeff Carter and Mike Richards leading your team. Well apparently Flyers GM Paul Holmgren wasn't satisfied. 1 day, 2 trades and a completely different Flyers team is hitting the ice for 2011-2012; Holmgren was able to ship off Richards and Carter in separate deals, signed Ilya Bryzagalov to a massive 9 year 51 million dollar contract and then loured Jaromir Jagr away from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Wow talk about a intense off season makeover. The moving of Carter and Richards was mainly to free up cap space, and to change up the attitude in the dressing room. Not only did they dump "dead weight" the also picked up hot young prospects; Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds. The off season moves haven't affected the Flyers in a negative way, like many suspected, instead they Flyers are on fire! They are 4th in the eastern conference, have the leagues leading scorer and are playing in a Winter Classic match up in a couple of days. But can they do it all again next off season? It looks like they will be losing captain and long time veteran Chris Pronger. It would appear that the era for blockbuster trades in the NHL are still make able. So why is this on the list of top 10's? Because it changed the make up of an entire NHL team; You replace long time NHL proven veterans with young rookies, trying to make their way in the NHL and a goalie who is frankly over rated. But give Peter Holmgren credit, pulling off such big trades, at first I wasn't sure what he was smoking when he, traded Richards and Carter, but now I really like the deal. After a while things start to leak out, Carter and Richards were a problem in the dressing room and weren't playing their best night in and night out, and those players need to be moved before that attitude spreads. So kudos to Holmgren.


3. How about the news that, the NHL was going to change up the two divisions and split 30 teams into 4 conferences. Don't believe it? well start believing it, once it was official that the Jets were back in Winnipeg, there was no question that teams had to change conferences in able to keep costs, and travel time down. Considering the Jets are in the conference as Carolina and Florida, that's not going to work long time. There were a lot of opions and discussions about maintaining rivals and regional battles; what came out of all this discussion; drastic changes, 4 conferences and a whole new playoff format, that could ultimately make a east vs. east Stanley cup showdown. So here's how it all breaks down for playoffs; top 4 teams from each conference make the playoffs, then the 4 teams in those conferences will battle it out, to make the top 2 from each conference, then some how the teams will be re seeded and then playoff some how. I love the new realignment, I think it will be exciting and add new meaning to the battle of Ontario and other important rivalries. So I'm excited to see how this will all work out and possibly even see an Ovechkin vs. Crosby Stanley cup final, or Loungo vs. Toews cup final. This is a big story for sure as it's changing the entire make up of the NHL.  I believe the conferences consist of 2, 7 team conferenes and 2, 6 team conference.


Some of the negatives to this new system; 2 teams wont make the post season, teams may be out of the playoff race by Christmas, we will lose the battle of the West vs. East teams which kind of sucks.


Some positives; every team will get to play every other team in a home and home showdown. So Leafs will play the Oilers more often. The possible east vs. east Stanley cup showdown, More importance on the conference rivals, like Ottawa vs. Toronto as likely only 1 of them will make the playoffs.


I can not wait to see this new system implemented, could make for a more interesting league and match ups, as teams will play other teams in their conferences 7 times each, putting more importance on those games.


2. Summer of Tragedy; this was quite the off season for the NHL and not in a positive way, we saw 3 former enforces kick the can and an entire hockey team dead after a plane crash in Russia. First player we lost was Derek Boogard, who accidentally over dosed, before he went to sleep, and did not awake in the morning, Next was Rick Rypien was the second death that shocked the hockey world, Rypien took his own life after battling depression for several years, due to his many concussion after his career full of fighting. Then when the hockey world was still reeling and trying to figure out and recover from these two deaths, we lost yet another player to accidental death; Wade Belak former enforcer was found dead in his apartment. All three players were enforces for their respective teams; the life of an enforcer is a lonely life, beat the crap out of other guys, or get your butt kicked. All three suffered from depression. Many are trying to link their deaths due to their careers and concussions, but ultimately it is wrong to do sure. It was a horrifying sad summer after hearing of the deaths of these players, the brotherhood of hockey players, united to honour these fallen players. Not long after, a plane carrying a KHL hockey team crashed in Russia, whipping out the whole KHL team. The entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team was killed after the plane hit a tower upon take off, 43 of 45 people on board were killed including ever player, many who had played in the NHL and all team officials. An entire elite KHL hockey team was whipped from existence, families were devastated, it was an absolute nightmare. 2011 had to be the worst summer for hockey, if this wasn't the worst I don't know what was. Tragedy after tragedy, we lost too many players, but most importantly too many people who were lost before their time, it has to be a reminder to everyone that hockey is just a game and there is more to life than hockey.


1. This number 1 story is pretty easy to guess if you've read some of my previous blog.... Concussions.

Whether the league want's to admit it or not, there is a concussion epidemic right now.  It all started with the first Crosby head injury, and has come to the point where, almost every night someone has been concussed. Crosby missed a whopping 11 months with his first concussion, then after his return in November, he was then put on injured reserve after a handful of games. More and more attention has been given to the concussions, and more and more big names are going down with concussions; names like Crosby, Miller, Pronger, Richards, Giroux, Weber. This has sparked some massive debates over what if anything the NHL can and should be doing to protect the players. The concussion epidemic, has sparked many changes throughout the league. There are now 30 players sitting out with concussions. 2011 was suppossed to be Crosby's year to solidify imself as the best player to play the game, instead 2011 was the year of the concussions.

One thing is for sure, hockey fans ever where should be happy to see 2011 coming to an end. We are starting a new year, a fresh slate a chance to make everything good again.
